From painted silk to wasp nests, the new "Fiber" exhibit at Abode Gallery is a dazzling display of nature in art

May 19, 2016, Stockholm, WI— Weaving, stitching, dyeing, tying, and even making collages from wasp nests: these are some of the fiber art techniques on display at the new “Fiber” exhibit at Abode Gallery in Stockholm, Wisconsin. The show will run from May 27th through July 5th, with an opening reception on Friday, May 27th.

Artists in the show are Kent Carlson, Deborah Foutch, Mavis Kjarland, Aimee Radman, Kristin Smith-Procter, and Tressa Sularz. Each artist has a unique, and sometimes surprising, approach to the world of fiber art. Take Kent Carlson’s unusual “found” materials, for example.

“I was throwing away an old wasp nest in my yard when I happened to notice the interesting patterns in it,” says Carlson. “I cut it apart and saw hundreds of lines in the fiber, circling the hive from top to bottom. That got me thinking, it’d probably make an interesting paper sculpture. Suddenly I found myself obsessed with this art project.”

Minneapolis artist Deborah Foutch, too, is obsessed with the natural world. Her interest in earth sciences led to her work with multiple layers of dynamic materials. Using a combination of painting and quilting methods, she embellishes her designs with techniques such as rusting, burning, and adding found objects.

“My current work explores the earth’s amazingly complex systems of soil, water, light, and air,” says Foutch. “These are multi-layered pieces that tell the story of the earth’s history, geology, and plant biology.” The results are both thought-provoking and beautiful to behold.

Abode Gallery owner and curator Alan Nugent has an eye for the unusual, and the “Fiber” exhibit gives him a chance to show some of the exceptionally creative work he admires.

“Fiber art is dimensional, layered, and complex,” says Nugent. “Our collection for the ‘Fiber’ show encompasses forms from the very ancient, like batik and weaving, to highly contemporary combinations of new, unexpected elements.”

Wearable and functional art will be a feature of the “Fiber” display. Batik artist Kristin Smith-Procter of Stockholm and weaver Aimee Radman of rural Red Wing both create elegant scarves as well as wall hangings. Nationally-known Twin Cities artist Tressa Sularz draws on traditional American basket-making techniques for her natural and hand-dyed rattan baskets.

Batik is also the primary medium of Pepin artist Mavis Kjarland, who uses the Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing to create landscapes of the Lake Pepin area. Her silk pieces, together with those of Smith-Procter, illustrate the versatility of this ancient art.

“Fiber” is the third in a series of six themed artist shows at Abode Gallery that will run throughout the summer and fall. The first show, “River,” featured paintings and photographs of the upper Mississippi River, and the second, “Wood,” was a display of the finest in regional woodworking. Upcoming shows will be “Animal,” “Word,” and “Earth.” All will feature the work of local and regional artists.

The Abode Gallery art openings are a part of the “Stockholm Arts Stroll” series in this tiny Wisconsin village, nationally known for its lively arts scene. Artists will be present to meet visitors to the gallery.

Wine, beer, and locally-made snacks will be served at the opening receptions. The gallery is next door to the wildly popular Stockholm Pie Company, which will be open late for the art openings.

Dates for the upcoming shows are:

May 27 - July 5: “Fiber”
July 8 - August 15: “Animal”
August 19 - September 26: “Word”
September 30 - November 7: “Earth”

Join Us: Art on the Vine Opening Reception & Gallery Show

We're thrilled to introduce our upcoming gallery show and invite you to join us for the opening reception! For this event we've collaborated with Villa Bellezza Winery, 1420 3rd Street, Pepin, WI, to bring you a collection of work celebrating wine, food and the beauty of the Great River.

The “Art on the Vine” exhibition will take place at Villa Bellezza Winery from March 8-31, 2014, with the opening reception taking place on March 8 from 6:30-9:00pm. The free event is open to the public. More than 20 local and regional artist works have been selected, with almost 40 pieces on display and available for purchase.

Villa Bellezza Winery, Pepin, WI

You must see this stunning venue! The winery complex is designed in a Mediterranean style with several stucco and stone buildings, including a 250+ person event center, surrounding a central piazza — much like in a town square somewhere in Italy.

The winery makes the perfect backdrop for the "Art on the Vine" exhibition. This unique and stunning juried show consists of one of a kind works in oil, watercolor, pastel, wood, ceramic and multimedia.  Select artists will be honored at the opening gala, with recognition and awards presented including Vintner’s Choice, Curator’s Choice and People’s Choice. The evening will also include live painting, music from Twin Cities group Doo Da Day, artist meet & greet, and exceptional food samplings and wine tastings provided by the award winning winery.

There was extensive interest in the show from area artists. The Great River, along the West Coast of Wisconsin, has inspired artists for centuries. Considered some of the most beautiful scenery in the nation, and named, “Prettiest Drive in America” by Huffington Post, it is no surprise that exquisite galleries and award winning wineries have developed in this well-known artists enclave. Its close proximity to Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Eau Claire, make the area a destination for art enthusiasts.

The theme of the show was well received. As one of the artists, Maria Dudley Kowalski stated, “Like wine making, the process of making of art is a beautiful exploration. The final creation not only appeals to its creator but it inspires creativity in others.”

Artists in the show include:

Jeff Stern, Madison, WI (Oil)
Margy Balwierz, Beldenville, WI (Ceramics)
Maria Dudley Kowalski, Maiden Rock, WI (Oil, Watercolor)
Reid Thorpe, Chaska, MN (Oil)

Abode Gallery Great River Road Exhibition Featuring Raelee Edgar

Artist Raelee Edgar at work in her studio.
Calling all art-lovers, classic car buffs and Great River Road enthusiasts... Join us as we celebrate travel and nostalgia of the open road!

The Great River Road Exhibition
Featuring the original works of Raelee Edgar
June 13 - July 31, 2013

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, June 15, 2013
4:30pm - 6:30pm

The State of Wisconsin proclaimed 2013 as the 75th anniversary of the Wisconsin Great River Road. Highway 35, Wisconsin’s Great River Road, runs down Wisconsin's west coast winding through artistic communities and charming historic villages. The journey is one of the greatest undiscovered drives in the Midwest.

The road with its curves and hills has been preserved to embrace the area’s scenic and historical significance.  Drivers on the Great River Road find a sense of freedom and a unique connection to the wild landscape. Along the road, eagles soar in and out of the trees, and limestone bluffs tower above the road like European castles. The Mighty Mississippi River stretches and winds with you like a friend on your drive, leaving you in awe of its necessity and natural beauty.  New journeyer’s are encouraged and invited to discover the magic.

Abode Gallery will highlight the works of artist Raelee Edgar in an exhibition entitled "The Great River Road".  Raelee is happily painting car memories, in Minnesota where she lives with her husband and two children. In recent years, her work has been exhibited in a number of juried shows and she's completed several commissions. Her artwork is held in both private and corporate collections.  When speaking about her work she states, “Time spent with loved ones and friends can be summoned by a car make or model. I hope my work lets people savor those memories.”

Ronalee’s work will be on view from June 15th- July 31st.  The opening for the Great River Road Exhibition will be June 15th from 4:30pm- 6:30pm. See you at the Opening!
